Zamboanga Sibugay Rep. Sharky Palma believed the newly-completed Ipil Airport could play a pivotal role in making the town of Ipil as the new regional center for the Zamboanga Peninsula.
A source in the office of the first district congressman, who asked not to be named, said the solon has welcomed the development.
The congressman even praised the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for the “timely completion of the airport.”
The new airport, the source said, has strengthened the bill filed by Palma which sought the transfer of the regional center to Ipil.
Palma filed House Bill No. 5051 seeking to designate Ipil town as the regional center. The provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga del Norte; and the cities of Zamboanga and Isabela comprise the Zamboanga Peninsula.
EO 429 had transferred only the administrative center but Zamboanga City has remained the commercial and industrial center.
This division, according to Palma, has resulted in scattered regional offices of the region.
He said the scattered regional offices cause an “additional burden to our citizens.”
The completion of the airport is “an argument for making the town of Ipil as the new regional center,” the source quoted Palma.
With the new airport, the DOTr said, both residents and that outside of the province have higher mobility.
There is no known date, however, when the new airport will be operational. (Featured Image: Facebook/Mindanao Sun)
